Innova vs Tempo Traveller for Kerala — the planner's call

Three numbers decide it: how many people, how much luggage, how tight the ghats. We run both fleets weekly from Trivandrum.

For a Kerala family tour or small-group trip, the Innova-vs-Tempo-Traveller call usually comes down to three numbers: how many people, how much luggage, and how tight the ghat roads on the route are. The Innova Crysta fits up to six adults with luggage. The 12-seater Tempo Traveller fits twelve. The honest middle is seven to eight, where two Innovas often beats one Tempo Traveller on tight Kerala ghats.

This page lays out the dimensions, the boot-space realities, the ghat-road comfort, the two-Innovas-vs-one-TT frame, and the fare delta — from the Trivandrum office that runs both vehicles weekly. Mango Cabs has both an Innova fleet and a Tempo Traveller fleet, so we're not selling you one over the other; we're giving you the planner's call. For the full per-seater hire detail on the TT side, see the 12-seater Tempo Traveller Kerala hire guide.

Quick decision frame

Which vehicle for which Kerala trip

The right vehicle for your Kerala trip depends on group size, luggage, route type, and whether everyone needs to stay in one vehicle. Here is the short version, then we unpack each piece below.

  • 2–6 adults with luggage, any Kerala route: Innova Crysta. The boot, cabin, and ghat-road agility all fit the trip.
  • 6–8 adults with significant luggage, ghat-heavy route (Munnar, Wayanad): Two Innovas often beats one 12-seater Tempo Traveller — more boot space, smaller turning circles, group splits naturally.
  • 8–12 adults, mixed luggage, mostly flat or moderate ghat routes: 12-seater Tempo Traveller. The one-vehicle convenience and lower per-passenger cost wins.
  • 13–17 adults, single-vehicle preference: 17-seater Tempo Traveller. The Innova does not scale here; three Innovas stops making sense.
  • 18+ adults, wedding parties, school excursions: 26-seater Tempo Traveller (mini-coach configuration). The only vehicle that handles the scale.

The decision is rarely close. It is closer when groups are exactly seven or eight with families splitting naturally — which is why the two-Innovas-vs-one-TT frame below is the most common question we answer on the Trivandrum office phone.

Head-to-head

Dimensions, capacity, and the boot reality

Manufacturer specs from Toyota India and Force Motors, with operational notes from twenty-one years of running both.

The Toyota Innova Crysta is 4,735 mm long; the Force Traveller 12-seater Tempo Traveller is 5,240 mm long, with a 600 mm longer wheelbase. That extra half-metre of length and the longer wheelbase is what you feel on a tight Munnar hairpin, and what allows the TT to fit twelve passengers in three rows of seats with a real boot bay behind them.

Below is the side-by-side view, then a full numerical spec table beneath it. A few things to call out upfront. First, the Innova is a comfortable 6-passenger vehicle in real-world Kerala-tour conditions — the paper 7-seat number assumes minimal luggage, which is rarely true on a 5-day loop. Second, the TT's larger turning radius (1.4 m more than the Innova) is a real factor on the Munnar ghat road's tightest hairpins; an experienced driver handles them, but it is more work. Third, the higher ground clearance on the TT is genuinely useful in Kerala monsoon, where some ghat-road stretches develop washouts in July–September.

When the seventh passenger forces a Tempo Traveller

The Innova Crysta seats 7 + driver on paper. With family-tour luggage on a multi-day Kerala route with hotel changes, the practical seating drops to 6 + driver. That seventh passenger is where the Tempo Traveller conversation starts.

Here is the math we walk through on the Trivandrum office phone. A family of six with one medium suitcase each — Innova works. The last row holds two adults; the boot holds six suitcases stacked properly; the cabin is comfortable for the full trip including a ghat-road run to Munnar or a return leg from Alleppey. Add a seventh adult and the last row gets cramped, and the boot has to compete with a seventh bag. Add a seventh passenger who is an infant in a carrier, and the math gets back to manageable — the carrier sits in the middle row and the boot still holds six bags.

The point is that paper-vs-practical seating matters. The Innova Crysta is a comfortable 6-passenger vehicle for a Kerala tour. It is not a comfortable 7-passenger vehicle for a Kerala tour. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not done the trip.

For 8–12 passengers, the 12-seater Tempo Traveller is the right call. It seats twelve in three rows of two-by-two with a rear bay that handles four medium suitcases plus soft duffles, and the cabin has individual AC vents at each push-back seat so there is no monsoon-humidity argument in the back row.

Boot + ghat reality

Boot space and Kerala ghat-road comfort

The Innova boot holds about 300 litres with the last row up. The 12-seater Tempo Traveller rear bay handles four medium suitcases plus soft duffles, with a roof carrier option for bulkier loads. On a 5-day Munnar–Alleppey loop with hotel changes, boot space usually fills before seats do — we see this every week.

A real-world Kerala-tour bag count. A family of six on a 5-day loop typically brings: six suitcases (one per adult), two soft duffles (kids' stuff, beach gear), one cooler box (water bottles, snacks), and one camera bag. That fills an Innova boot completely and bleeds into the rear footwell. The same family in a Tempo Traveller has the rear bay, the footwells of unused seats, and a roof carrier if needed — the boot story stops mattering.

On ghat roads, the comparison flips slightly. The Innova's 5.4 m turning radius handles the tightest Munnar tea estates hairpins without a three-point turn. The TT's 6.8 m radius requires more care, and on the steepest Munnar stretches the driver works the wheel harder. Wayanad ghats — the climbs from Kozhikode side — are wider and less of a problem for the TT. The Kovalam–Alleppey–Kochi stretch is essentially flat; vehicle choice does not change for ghat reasons there.

Monsoon caveat. Both vehicles run year-round. The TT's higher ground clearance helps on July–September washouts; the Innova handles them too, just with less margin. Our drivers know which side of the road floods in monsoon — that is a routing call, not a vehicle-choice call. The Trivandrum-to-Munnar route page covers the ghat-pacing detail end-to-end.

Most-asked question

Two Innovas vs one Tempo Traveller — when each wins

For 7–8 passengers with significant luggage on tight ghat roads, two Innovas can beat one Tempo Traveller. The Mango Cabs Trivandrum office gets this question on the WhatsApp line every week. Here is when the math works.

Two Innovas wins when:

  • The group is exactly 7–8 with luggage, and the route is ghat-heavy (Munnar + Wayanad + Thekkady combinations).
  • The group splits naturally into two families that can pair up — two cars, two cabins, two boot bays.
  • Smaller turning circles matter on tight hairpins, and you do not want one driver working a 5,240 mm vehicle around them for five days.
  • Group cohesion is not a hard requirement — the two vehicles travel in convoy.

One Tempo Traveller wins when:

  • The group is 10+ adults, and two Innovas means leaving someone behind or squeezing.
  • Group cohesion is the priority — wedding parties, pilgrimage groups, school excursions where the group stays together.
  • The route is mostly flat or moderate (Trivandrum–Kochi, Alleppey–Kovalam, Trivandrum–Kanyakumari).
  • The customer wants one driver, one invoice, one WhatsApp thread — operational simplicity wins on multi-day trips.

Cost frame. Two Innovas typically run 30–40% more per day than one 12-seater Tempo Traveller, because you are paying two day-rentals plus two drivers plus two fuel allowances. The per-passenger cost flips though — for a full 12-seater booking, the TT is meaningfully cheaper per head than the same group split across two Innovas with one passenger short of full occupancy. We confirm the exact delta on WhatsApp inside ten minutes once you send the trip details.

When TT is the only call

Group sizes where only a Tempo Traveller works

For groups of thirteen or more on a single-vehicle booking, the Tempo Traveller is the only sensible call — the Innova caps out at 6–7 practical passengers, and three Innovas for seventeen people stops making operational and cost sense. The 14, 17, and 26-seater Tempo Traveller configurations cover the larger group bands.

Use cases where TT is the only viable choice:

  • School and college excursions (typically 15–25 students plus escorts).
  • Pilgrimage circuits where the group books one vehicle for the entire Sabarimala or Velankanni circuit.
  • Wedding-party transfers between venues, hotels, and the airport — usually 26-seater.
  • Joint-family Kerala tours where the whole family insists on travelling together.

Force Urbania callout. Our fleet also includes the Force Urbania, Force Motors' newer premium Tempo Traveller variant, for groups that want additional legroom and a quieter cabin on multi-day Kerala loops. It runs the same chassis dimensions as the standard 12-seater Traveller but with upgraded interiors and noise insulation. Useful when the group has elderly passengers or the trip is 7+ days.

Fare frame

What the rate delta actually looks like

Tempo Traveller day-rental runs roughly 15–25% higher than an Innova day-rental per day in Kerala. The per-passenger cost flips the other way — a full 12-seater Tempo Traveller is meaningfully cheaper per head than the same group split across two Innovas, because you pay one day-rental and one driver instead of two.

We don't publish point fares — pricing for both vehicle classes is shaped by diesel, driver bata, route duration, season, and inter-state permits (where applicable). The exact figure for your trip is confirmed on WhatsApp within ten minutes of you sending the dates, group size, and route. What is included in both day-rentals: driver bata, fuel, and 5% GST per the CGST Act 2017. What is billed at actuals: inter-state tourist vehicle permits (if you are crossing into Tamil Nadu or Karnataka), parking, toll, and any night halt outside Trivandrum.

For full outstation context across both vehicle classes, the outstation taxi services page covers the inter-city run model end-to-end.
