Kerala Tour Itineraries by Tempo Traveller — 5, 7 & 10-Day Loops

Three loops

Kerala tour itineraries by Tempo Traveller — three loops we run most

5, 7 and 10-day loops out of Trivandrum since 2005. Day-by-day pacing as our drivers actually run them.

A Kerala tour by Tempo Traveller from Trivandrum typically runs as one of three loops — a 5-day Kovalam-Alleppey-Munnar circuit, a 7-day expansion that adds Thekkady and Wayanad, or a 10-day inter-state loop that crosses into Tamil Nadu for Madurai and Kanyakumari. Mango Cabs has run these loops out of Trivandrum since 2005, and the day-by-day pacing below is how our drivers actually run them — leave times, drive durations, stop notes, and which Tempo Traveller size is the right call for each.

For the full Tempo Traveller hire menu including 12, 14, 17 and 26-seater configurations, start at the full Tempo Traveller hire menu. For multi-vehicle Kerala tour packages from Trivandrum that aren't Tempo-Traveller-specific, see our Kerala tour packages from Trivandrum. WhatsApp the trip details — dates, group size, which itinerary shape — and our Trivandrum office confirms the vehicle, driver and transparent quote in 10 minutes.

Three loops cover roughly 90% of the Kerala tour Tempo Traveller bookings we take out of Trivandrum. Each is a real itinerary our drivers run weekly — not a brochure list of destinations.

  • 5-day loop: Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey → Munnar → Trivandrum. ~700 km of driving. Best for first-time Kerala visitors and parties of 8–12.
  • 7-day loop: the 5-day loop expanded with Thekkady (Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary) on day five and Wayanad (northern hill station) on days six and seven. ~1,400 km. Best for joint families and corporate offsites of 13–17 pax.
  • 10-day inter-state: the 7-day loop plus Madurai (Meenakshi Amman temple) and Kanyakumari. ~1,900 km, crosses into Tamil Nadu, needs an inter-state tourist-vehicle permit which we sort 48 hours before the trip. Best for travellers with the time and the budget to do Kerala plus southern Tamil Nadu in one Tempo Traveller booking.

All three start from Trivandrum (the Sreekariyam garage or your hotel pickup) and return to Trivandrum. If you're landing at Kochi (COK) airport instead, mention it on the WhatsApp brief and we'll restructure the day-one pickup; we run COK pickups from Trivandrum every day.

Pick the loop

Which itinerary for which group?

The 5-day loop is the most-booked Kerala Tempo Traveller itinerary for parties of 8–12; the 7-day loop is the joint-family or corporate-offsite expansion; the 10-day is the inter-state holiday for groups with the time and the budget to do Kerala plus southern Tamil Nadu in one trip. A quick comparison:

ItineraryTotal driveGroup sizeRecommended Tempo TravellerInter-state permit
5-day Kovalam-Alleppey-Munnar~700 km8–12 pax with luggage12-seater (default); 14-seater conservative for multi-stop luggageNo
7-day adds Thekkady + Wayanad~1,400 km13–17 pax, joint family / corporate17-seater (boot space matters on a 7-day loop)No
10-day adds Madurai + Kanyakumari~1,900 km15–22 pax17-seater for 15–17 pax; 26-seater for 18+Yes (Tamil Nadu, ~₹2,500–₹4,500)

If you're between sizes — say, twelve adults plus one infant on a 7-day loop — WhatsApp the group breakdown and we'll tell you whether the 12-seater squeezes or the 14-seater is the conservative call. For the cross-vehicle-class decision (when an Innova works better than a Tempo Traveller), see Innova vs Tempo Traveller for a Kerala tour.

Group of 12?

12-Seater Tempo Traveller Hire Guide

The default configuration for 8–12 pax on the 5-day loop — boot, seating and pricing convention deep-dive.

Day-by-day

5-day Kerala loop — Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey → Munnar → Trivandrum

~700 km over five days. The most-booked Kerala Tempo Traveller itinerary out of our Trivandrum office.

The 5-day Kerala Tempo Traveller loop runs Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey → Munnar → Trivandrum, covering ~700 km of driving over five days for a single vehicle and one driver. It's the loop we run most weeks of the year for parties of 8–12, and it's the trip that teaches families the boot fills before the seats do.

Which Tempo Traveller for this 5-day loop? The 12-seater is the default for parties of 8–12 with one bag each. For 10–12 pax with multi-day luggage and hotel changes, the 14-seater is the conservative call — the boot fills before the seats do. See the 12-seater hire guide for Kerala for full configuration detail.

Munnar route

Trivandrum to Munnar route

Distance, time and the 6 a.m. departure rule for the Day 3 / Day 5 leg of the 5-day loop.

  1. Day 1

    Trivandrum → Kovalam (~16 km, ~30 min)

Start: 11 a.m. pickup after hotel checkout or airport landing (TRV airport is 15 minutes from Kovalam). Drive: Short hop on the Kovalam Road; light traffic outside peak.

Stops: Kovalam Light House, Hawah Beach, Vizhinjam fishing harbour, optional Karamana for late lunch. Night stay: Kovalam beach-front or cliff resort. Easy first day; lets long-haul flyers reset.

  2. Day 2

    Kovalam → Alleppey (~155 km, ~3.5 hours)

Start: 8 a.m. from Kovalam. Drive: NH-66 north via Kollam; smooth highway, two short coffee stops typical. Stops: Optional Varkala cliff (~50 km from Trivandrum); Kollam Ashtamudi-lake viewpoint.

Arrival: Alleppey by 12 p.m. Houseboat check-in at 12 p.m., backwaters cruise with overnight onboard. The Tempo Traveller stays parked at the boat jetty; the driver overnights in driver accommodation. See the Alleppey tourism page on Kerala Tourism.

  3. Day 3

    Alleppey → Munnar (~190 km, ~5 hours)

Start: Houseboat check-out 9 a.m., Tempo Traveller departure 9.30 a.m. Drive: Longest single-day drive of the loop — includes the Kuttikanam ghat road climb. In August monsoon add 45–60 minutes for ghat-road caution.

Stops: Vandiperiyar tea-stall lunch is the standard mid-route halt. Arrival: Munnar by 2.30–3 p.m. — the tea estates clear of afternoon mist by 11 a.m. so a Day 3 arrival in early afternoon is photo-friendly. See the Munnar tourism page on Kerala Tourism.

  4. Day 4

    Munnar (local sightseeing)

Start: 8 a.m. from the hotel for the local Munnar circuit. Drive: Short estate-road drives between viewpoints — narrow roads, driver paces to suit. Stops: Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, Top Station (~32 km from Munnar town, ~1 hour each way; viewpoint into Tamil Nadu border). Night stay: Munnar (same hotel).

  5. Day 5

    Munnar → Trivandrum (~270 km, ~6 hours)

Start: 6 a.m. from Munnar — early start avoids ghat-road traffic and lands the group in Trivandrum by mid-afternoon. Drive: Reverse of the Day 3 route via Kuttikanam ghat; in monsoon allow a 30-minute buffer. Stops: Vandiperiyar breakfast halt; Adoor lunch stop. Drop: Trivandrum hotel or TRV airport by 1.30–2.30 p.m.

7-day loop

7-day Kerala loop — adds Thekkady (Periyar) and Wayanad

The 7-day Kerala Tempo Traveller loop expands the 5-day circuit with Thekkady (Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary) on day five and Wayanad (northern hill station via Kochi-Thrissur-Kozhikode) on days six and seven. Total drive ~1,400 km. This is the joint-family loop — 13–17 pax — and the 17-seater is the right Tempo Traveller call because the boot space matters on a seven-day run with two clothing changes per traveller.

Days 1–4 — same as the 5-day loop

Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey → Munnar, then local Munnar sightseeing on Day 4. The 7-day group typically adds a spice-garden stop in the afternoon on the way back from Top Station for the extra leisure day.

Day 5 — Munnar → Thekkady (~110 km, ~3.5 hours)

Start: 8.30 a.m. from Munnar. Drive: Estate-and-forest road via Devikulam and Kumily; scenic, light traffic outside weekends. Stops: Spice plantation walk (Kumily) before checking into Thekkady. Arrival: Thekkady by 12.30 p.m. Afternoon: Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary boat ride (Periyar Lake — book the 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. slot). Bamboo rafting and nature walks are optional add-ons. Night stay: Thekkady (Periyar resort or Kumily town).

Day 6 — Thekkady → Kochi → Wayanad (~360 km, ~9 hours)

Start: 7 a.m. from Thekkady. Drive: Long day — drivers handle this with a 30-minute lunch break at Aluva (~3.5 hours from Thekkady) and the run continues to Wayanad via Thrissur-Kozhikode. Some 7-day itineraries split this with an overnight at Kochi for a half-day Fort Kochi visit. Arrival: Wayanad (Kalpetta or Vythiri) by 5 p.m. Wayanad is ~430 km from Trivandrum routed via Kochi-Thrissur-Kozhikode, and it is always an overnight leg from south Kerala.

Day 7 — Wayanad → Trivandrum (~430 km, ~10–11 hours)

Start: 6 a.m. from Wayanad. Drive: The long return — the driver paces it for the group's comfort. Stops: Calicut lunch halt; Cochin or Alappuzha tea-break. Drop: Trivandrum by 6–7 p.m. Many groups prefer to break this into Day 7 Wayanad → Kochi (overnight) + Day 8 Kochi → Trivandrum — the 8-day variant — WhatsApp the preference at booking.

Which Tempo Traveller for this 7-day loop?

17-seater for 13–17 pax — boot space is the binding constraint on a seven-day loop with two clothing changes per traveller. The fare delta over the 14-seater is small; the boot delta is large. For the configuration deep-dive see the 17-seater hire guide for Kerala.

Larger group?

17-Seater Tempo Traveller Hire Guide

For 13–17 pax joint families and corporate offsites on the 7-day loop — boot capacity is the binding constraint.

10-day inter-state

10-day Kerala + Tamil Nadu — adds Madurai and Kanyakumari

The 10-day Kerala + Tamil Nadu itinerary runs the 7-day loop and adds Madurai (Meenakshi Amman temple) and Kanyakumari on days eight to ten — both Tamil Nadu destinations require an inter-state tourist-vehicle permit which we sort 48 hours before the trip. The driver handles the permit paperwork at the Kerala-Tamil Nadu checkpost while passengers stay in the vehicle. Total drive ~1,900 km. Best for 15–22 pax willing to commit ten days for the full south-India loop.

Days 1–7 — same as the 7-day loop

Trivandrum → Kovalam → Alleppey → Munnar → Munnar local → Thekkady → Wayanad. (See the 7-day section above for per-day pacing.)

Day 8 — Wayanad → Madurai (~300 km, ~7 hours, inter-state)

Start: 7 a.m. from Wayanad. Drive: Crosses the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border at the Mananthavady or Sulthan Bathery checkpost (driver presents the inter-state permit; we sorted it 48 hours before the trip). After the border the route picks up via Coimbatore and Dindigul into Madurai. Stops: Coimbatore breakfast halt; Dindigul lunch. Arrival: Madurai by 2 p.m. Afternoon: Meenakshi Amman temple visit (the late-afternoon window is the photo-friendly time). Night stay: Madurai.

Day 9 — Madurai → Kanyakumari (~240 km, ~5 hours)

Start: 8 a.m. from Madurai. Drive: Smooth Tamil Nadu state highway via Tirunelveli; flat run. Arrival: Kanyakumari by 1.30 p.m. Afternoon: Vivekananda Rock Memorial ferry, Thiruvalluvar statue viewpoint, Triveni Sangam (Bay of Bengal–Arabian Sea–Indian Ocean confluence). Evening: Sunset at Sunset View Point. Night stay: Kanyakumari hotel.

Day 10 — Kanyakumari → Trivandrum (~85 km, ~2 hours)

Start: Sunrise viewing first (5.45 a.m. at the eastern viewpoint), breakfast at the hotel, departure 9.30 a.m. Drive: Short hop on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala coastal highway; crosses back into Kerala at the Kaliyikkavila checkpost. Drop: Trivandrum hotel or TRV airport by 12 p.m. — afternoon onward flights work fine.

Which Tempo Traveller for this 10-day loop?

17-seater for 15–17 pax; 26-seater for 18–22 pax. The 26-seater is the right call past 17 not because of seat count alone but because the boot has to swallow ten days of luggage including the post-temple shopping that almost always happens at Madurai. Inter-state permit at ~₹2,500–₹4,500 is billed at actuals on the invoice.
